Vote Now: Funniest New Grad Patient Encounter
Whatsup, MuFKRs! 🎉
Welcome to another issue of “Is It an Emergency?” — the place where healthcare workers come together to share the wildest, most WTF moments from the ER.
Today's topic: New Grad Nurses. We love their pristine scrubs and textbook answers, but wow... that first crazy shift is the one that never leaves your core memory. 😂

🍆 with a Turtleneck
I was a new grad RN and had to place a Foley in my 90 yr old male patient. I had never seen an uncircumcised penis and didnt pull back when trying to insert! I asked my CNA who was male to help me. We went in and when i pulled the blanket down, my CNA started laughing and said “You’ve never seen a dick with a turtleneck?” To make matters more awkward, when i was making my 2nd attempt, the patient flinched and groaned after which his glass eye popped out and rolled onto the floor.

NG Loop-de-Loop 🔄
Me and my friend when we were new grad nurses working night shift in the ER made everything a two person job lol. she had a patient who needed an NG tube and neither of us had ever put one in before, unless you count a mannequin during skills check offs. We were short staffed obviously (what ER is actually staffed?), so we didn’t have anyone else to ask to help us. So we go in there together, the patient is high as a kite from IV Ativan and we start inserting it, have the patient look down and swallow blah blah blah… the patient starts gagging and coughing, as we expected so we kept pushing it down. UNTIL, the patient looks up briefly and all we see is the other end of the NG tube sticking straight out of her mouth. Me and my friend were dying laughing in her face because at this point we couldn’t hold it in. Thank god the patient just got that Ativan because she was laughing with us and let us try again right after that (we got it the second time). I’ll never forget that, definitely a core memory

Sky High Amputee 💨
As a new grad, I had a sky high patient get out of his restraints, rip the metal supportive leg off an old sink, and chase me, swinging it the whole time and threatening to kill me. It took a couple male nurses and a security guard to take him down. The best part was he was an amputee, right leg,
