Welcome back to Is It an Emergency? — where healthcare workers share the moments that make you laugh, cringe, and question humanity.
This week’s theme: Home Remedy Treatments/Fails
You’ve seen it: patients trying something at home before coming in… and it never goes the way they hoped. Cue the collective head‑shake from the entire ER.

Amish couple, brought son to hospital from Kentucky to Missouri on Wagon. Wrapping him in onions to help his hypoxic respiratory failure. He was also prescribed silver to inhale from a chiropractor claiming to be an MD.

I had a Patient who was napping when a cockroach crawled in her ear. She could feel it moving around, so she heated up some vegetable oil and poured it into her ear. She thought it would kill the cockroach, but nope!

Working triage. A Father, Mother, a young child, and the sibling patient came in for a second degree burn to the hand. The entire family came in hot, tuck in roll from the car. I was new to the ER and the Father had an entire stick of butter rubbing it on the burn. I nicely tried to explain how it is not helping. I finally had to raise my voice and tell him to put down the butter.
