Welcome to another issue of “Is It an Emergency?”—the place where healthcare workers come together to share the wildest, most WTF moments from the ER.

Today's Topic: Deathbed Confessions — The final words that had us SHOOK.

We've all had those moments when dying patients decided to drop BOMBS on us. No takebacks, no consequences, just pure "here's the fucked up thing I never told anyone." Today's stories might require a stiff drink after reading.

WW2 Dementia

Took care of a WW2 veteran with dementia. He would say the number "22" over and over and the family never knew the significance of it. The number didn't line up with any significant events or dates that they were aware of. The day before he died his mental state became incredibly clear and he started telling the staff "22 men. I killed 22 men over there."

War Crimes

He told us we could have the contents and that his name was Dietrich. He said he had risen to the rank of colonel in the elite Nazi guard. He told us through hypoxic rattling gasps that in 1942 he ordered and supervised the murder of over 4,000 civilians, mainly women and children, somewhere in Hungary. He said he was never charged with war crimes and escaped the Nuremberg war crime trials. He had kept that secret for 40 years and needed to release it like a confessional before he died.

Abuse

Had an elderly woman who had gone downhill and was on her death bed for about a week. She kept asking me to read the Bible to her and as soon as I would start she would scream that he was coming to get her, that he was waiting right behind me. Very unnerving at 3am. Finally I asked her who was coming to get her and she replied with "the devil's coming for me because I let my husband s*xually abuse our kids and did nothing.
